The invention relates to a device for refrigerating and/or freezing starting substances, especially food, said device comprising two directly adjacent treatment regions surrounded by a housing. In at least one of the treatment regions, heat is extracted from the starting substances by direct or indirect contact with deep-frozen liquefied gas, while the second treatment region has a transport belt for transporting the starting substances through the second treatment region. Said device comprises a gas suction device by which means a pressure drop can be generated inside the housing, as a result of which cold gas formed in the first treatment region by evaporation of deep-frozen liquefied gas flows out of the first treatment region, and then flows through the second treatment region, also contributing to the refrigerating of the product.
