The present invention relates to a process for opening of diverse epoxides by amines using zirconium compound as catalyst in the presence or absence of a solvent at an appropriate temperature to yield optically active or racemic 2-aminoalcohols, also the ratio of possible regioisomers formed by using unsymmetrical epoxide as substrate can be controlled by the selection of suitable catalyst, solvent and/or reaction temperature.
