The invention relates to a scanning device for scanning dental objects comprising a base plate to which dental objects can be attached and a mounting structure such as a mounting plate to which an optical scanning system is attached and wherein the scanning device further comprises means for moving the mounting structure. Furthermore and the invention relates to a method for scanning dental objects comprising the steps of (a) attaching a dental object to the base plate of the inventive scanning device and wherein a first angle between the surface of the base plate and the surface of the mounting structure or the plane defined by the optical axes of the scanning device is enclosed, (b) scanning the attached dental object to obtain a first data set, (c) using the means for moving the mounting structure to change the first angle to a second angle and (d) scanning the attached dental object to obtain a second data set.
