The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating osteoporosis by including Sargassum serratifolium extract as an active ingredient, and various applications thereof. When using the Sargassum serratifolium extract as an active ingredient, the Sargassum serratifolium extract can be beneficially used in related pharmaceutical or food fields by preventing or treating osteoporosis since the Sargassum serratifolium extract does not have a cytotoxic effect and inhabits the differentiation of osteoclasts in monocyte by inhibiting the expression of nuclear factor of activated T cells cytoplasmic 1 (NFATc1), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), cathepsin K (CTSK), and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9).본 발명은 톱니모자반(Sargassum serratifolium) 추출물을 유효성분으로 포함하는 골다공증 예방 또는 치료용 약학적 조성물 및 이의 다양한 적용에 관한 것이다. 본 발명의 톱니모자반 추출물을 유효성분으로 이용 시, 세포 독성이 없고, NFATc1(nuclear factor of activated T cells cytoplasmic 1), TRAP(tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase), CTSK(cathepsin K) 및 MMP-9(matrix metalloproteinase-9)의 발현을 억제하여 단핵구에서 파골세포로의 분화를 억제하므로, 골다공증을 예방 또는 치료할 수 있어, 관련된 약학 또는 식품 분야에 유용하게 이용될 수 있다.
