Hazardous waste is treated by shredding and then passing the material throughanenclosure by means of a conveyor through direct steam impingement. Theenclosure ismaintained at a pressure greater than or equal to atmospheric pressure inorder to maintainsteam temperature at or above 212°F. Pressure locks are positioned atan inlet and dischargeof the enclosure. The pressure locks allow transport of waste material intoand out of theenclosure while maintaining a pressure differential between the interior andexterior of theenclosure.
