The present invention aims to reduce waste from medication left in a containerafter delivery of the medication. A medication delivery device comprises apiston rodand an electric motor for driving said piston rod. There is provided a methodcomprising: bringing the piston rod into contact with a piston of themedicationcontainer from a known, retracted position； detecting the contact bymonitoring theamperage of the electric motor； counting the number of revolutions of saidelectricmotor to determine the distance covered by said piston rod from its retractedpositionto its contact with said piston, and thus the position of the piston in themedicationcontainer； and determining an initial amount of medication contained in themedication container from the piston position, wherein the initial amount ofmedicationin the medication container is the amount of medication in the medicationcontainerbefore any delivery of the medication.
