The present invention relates to a method for the treatment of Laminariales alga, such as alga of the species Saccharina latissima, comprising mixing the alga with an aqueous solution comprising from 0.1 g/L to 50 g/L calcium salt and/or from 1 g/L to 500 g/L sodium chloride incubating the mixture at a temperature of above 60°C and cooling the alga to a temperature of from 10°C to 40°C. Further, the invention relates to a method for the manufacture of an alga-containing food product, comprising treating a Laminariales alga according to the invention and adding the treated alga to a food product. Thereby, the invention also provides a food product comprising Laminariales alga, such as a food product obtainable with a method according to the invention.
