The present invention relates to a novel formulation for releasing nitric oxide, which if need be permits the rapid release of nitrogen monoxide and at the same time the formation of S-nitrosothiol compounds, which by releasing NO more slowly and over an extended period, allow a longer period of action thereof. The kit that is the subject-matter of the present invention comprises: a) a liquid phase comprising a solvent and at least one reducing agent； b) a solid phase comprising a nitrate and/or nitrite salt, copper ions and at least one thiol. The kit of the invention can advantageously be used in all clinical situations in which the release of NO can act on the aetiology and pathogenesis of the disorder. Particularly preferred is its use in the treatment of male sexual dysfunction, in particular erectile dysfunction.
