A side rail assembly comprising elongate carriers suitable to extend upright at two lengthwise ends of a bed, shuttles mounted to slide along the carriers and a side rail extending between the carriers wherein the side rail has an upper bar 109 with a portion 108 which dips downwardly in use and a lower bar 110 and wherein there are mountings with releasable attachment means to secure the side rail to the shuttles such that it can only be mounted with the upper bar above the lower bar. Braces may extend between the upper 109 and lower 110 bars and differently shaped sockets and lugs may be used to prevent incorrect mounting. The device is designed to allow a user to exit a care bed more easily whilst retaining barriers at either end.
