The present invention relates to stabilizing compositions and methods of stabilizing viral and bacterial vaccines. Vaccines of the invention comprise VLPs together with stabilizers such as, for example, sugar alcohols (eg, sorbitol) and degraded gelatin. Preferably the gelatin has an average molecular weight of 10,000 kD or less. The vaccines described above have substantially improved thermal stability as well as long term stability.
