An apparatus for sterilising a surgical scoping device (e.g. endoscopes, gastroscopes) 50 comprising a sterilisation instrument 10 insertable through a longitudinal channel that extends along an insertion tube 52 of the scoping device. The sterilisation instrument 10 comprises an elongate probe comprising a coaxial cable 12 which conveys radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic (EM) energy and/or microwave EM energy, and a probe tip 14 connected at the distal end of the coaxial cable. The coaxial cable 12 comprises an inner conductor (108, fig 2), a middle dielectric material (111, fig 2), and an outer conductor (110, fig 2). The probe tip 14 comprises an insulating cap, a first electrode (102, fig 2) connected to the inner conductor (108, fig 2), a second electrode (104, fig 2) connected to the outer conductor (110, fig 2), and an outlet for releasing plasma. An apparatus in another embodiment comprises a plasma applicator mounted in a housing which defines an enclosure for receiving the surgical scoping device. In another embodiment is an apparatus comprising a housing, a brush and a drive element which causes relative motion of the brush within the housing.
