This invention relates to a system or apparatus for increasing the size of a urine patch of an animal, by deflecting the urine stream while the animal is urinating. Urine patches, particularly those of dairy cows, contain high levels of nitrates, mostly in the form of urea. The concentration of urea within a typical urine patch is often four times as much as the soil, the enzymes within the soil, and the local vegetation can efficiently process. The result is that nitrogen and nitrates or nitrites are often released into the surrounding atmosphere, or the surrounding waterways. To solve this problem, the invention provides a system for deflecting the urine stream when an animal urinates. The stream deflecting system, or apparatus, uses &lsquotail lift&rsquo to initiate operation of the system. The intention is to increase the size of the resulting urine patch by at least four times, compared to a urine patch from an uninterrupted urine stream.
