PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge unit capable of increasing the ion discharge amount by reducing the distance between a discharge electrode and a counter electrode while preventing discharge sparking and an air cleaning apparatus using the same.SOLUTION: A needle-like discharge electrode 17 has a sloped front end. A counter electrode 14 has a plate like shape. The needle-like discharge electrode 17 is disposed perpendicular to the plate like counter electrode 14 being in non-contact therewith. A portion of the discharge electrode 17 perpendicular to the counter electrode 14 is covered with a heat shrink tube 17b.
