An object of the present invention is to provide a method for diagnosing and treating cancer using the HERV-H env gene and protein. In particular, cancer is diagnosed by detecting the expression of the HERV-H env gene, and a reagent used for expression detection is used as a diagnostic agent. In addition, cancer is treated by suppressing the function of the HERV-H env gene, and a reagent used for function suppression is used as an anticancer agent.
