A dental cleaning appliance such as an electric toothbrush includes a handle and stem and a fluid delivery system with an extendable rinse nozzle 36 for delivering bursts of working fluid to the teeth of a user. The nozzle 36 is movable with a fluid conduit 230,232 ,which is biased for movement relative to the handle and stem, to an extended distal position in which it is urged against a users teeth, in use. A burst of fluid may be conveyed through a fluid conduit system 230,232 in the stem 26 and through the nozzle 36 upon a sensor detecting movement of the nozzle 36 entering an interproximal gap to dislodge matter therein. A brush unit with bristles 32 mounted on a bristle carrier may extend at least partially about the nozzle 36 and is driven for movement relative to the nozzle. The fluid may be pumped from a refillable reservoir surrounding the stem into an accumulator which has a solenoid valve controlling the bursts fluid to the nozzle based upon the sensor output.
