A guide wire, a manufacturing method, and a use method are described. The guidewire may include a core having one or more preformed ribs along a portion thereof. The ribs may form a portion of the outer surface of the guide wire, or may form a texture or shape of the outer surface of the guide wire. The ribs and the outer texture of the guide wire advantageously help maintain the guide wire in the desired position within the body and can help prevent or limit movement. The formation of ribs on the outer surface of the core may allow the guide wire to have greater stiffness and rigidity. The core may include a region of reduced diameter over the circle of ribs.
