A method for producing a genetically modified animal, said method comprising exposing embryos or cells to mRNA encoding TALEN, wherein TALEN specifically binds to the target chromosome site in embryos or cells, cloning cells into a surrogate mother or implanting embryos into a surrogate mother, while the surrogate the mother, therefore, bears an animal that is genetically modified only at the target chromosome site for TALEN and does not contain the reporter gene. 2. The method of claim 1, comprising exposing the TALEN embryos without a reporter gene, wherein more than about 1% of the embryos comprise modification at the target chromosome site. The method according to claim 1 or 2, comprising obtaining embryos having a genetic structure that is known to be capable of expressing a set of traits, and acting on TALEN embryos without a reporter gene, and screening a born animal for modification and for expression of the set of traits. four. A method according to claim 1, comprising exposing the TALEN cells without a reporter gene and cloning the cells, with more than 1% of the cloned cells producing animals including a modification at the target chromosome site. The method of claim 1, comprising exposing the TALEN cells without a reporter gene, producing colonies of clonal cells, and testing a subpopulation of the members of the colonies to identify colonies that include modification at the target chromosome site. The method of claim 5, wherein testing a subpopulation of colony members is a destructive process.
