Upon compression of the disc halves, the scanning device locates a vein, a signal is given off, and the disc halves lock in the appropriate position. The needle is introduced into the blood stream by pressing on the lid of the cassette. The lid slides back and the tip of a syringe or of the cannula of a blood transfusion system or of the cannula of an evacuated blood sample container is introduced via a hermetic aperture situated beneath the lid.
