The present invention relates to a composition for preventing and treating obesity containing melatonin as an active ingredient, the melatonin of the present invention significantly inhibits the differentiation of preadipocytes, and prevents cell death of adipocytes. Since it shows an inducing effect, the melatonin can be usefully used as an active ingredient of an anti-obesity composition.본 발명은 멜라토닌을 유효성분으로 함유하는 비만 예방 및 치료용 조성물에 관한 것으로, 본 발명의 멜라토닌(melatonin)은 지방전구세포(preadipocytes)의 분화를 유의적으로 억제하고, 지방전구세포의 세포사멸을 유도하는 효과를 나타내므로, 상기 멜라토닌을 항비만용 조성물의 유효성분으로 유용하게 사용할 수 있다.
