An apparatus for forming a deformation in a nonwoven web is disclosed. The apparatus includes a pair of forming members that form a nip therebetween. These forming members include a first forming member having a surface with a plurality of discrete spaced apart male forming elements and a second forming having a surface with a plurality of recesses in the second forming member. The recess is aligned and configured to receive the male forming element therein, the recess being larger than the planar outer periphery of the male element and may completely surround the planar outer periphery of the male element It has a flat outer periphery.
