Abstract: The invention discloses an experimental setup which will permit the simulation of processing . conditions dn removal of caries and tooth structure in abrasive salt jet drilling based dentistry. The experimental set up comprises of abrasive mixing chamber, nozzle, tooth holder, compressor, air jet cleaner and camera. A new design of abrasive mixing chamber that requires no vibration unit is used to provide uniform mixing of air stream with abrasive-. : sodium chloride mixture. Sodium Chloride in pulverised form that enhances remineralisation of enamel surface is combined with abrasives such as alumina, silicon carbide & boron .carbide in different proportion for different applications. Nozzle with different adaptors are used to direct different shapes and types of abrasive particles to impinge on the surface of the tooth structure for diverse dental applications such as cleaning of stains, removal of tooth caries, removal of pre-deposited amalgam fillings, internal cleaning of tunnel preparation and cavity preparation. A pair of air jet cleaners dusts away the abrasive-sodium chloride powder mixture periodically and an installed camera captures the image of the changes occurred in the tooth structure on-line for further image processing to determine the caries distribution and the diameter of drilled hole in the tooth structure time to time. This experimental setup would be helpful in. achieving the optimum processing conditions for efficient removal of caries and minimal removal of healthy tooth structure.
