Discloses a method of growing at least one transgenic plant in a field, wherein said method comprises planting of at least one seed of said at least one plant in said field and applying to said field comprising said at least one plant a first herbicide selected from the group comprising a phenoxy auxin herbicide and an aryloxyphenoxypropionate herbicide, wherein said at least one plant comprises a plurality of transgenic plant cells, said cells comprising a polynucleotide that encodes an AAD-1 protein comprising the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 9 or a variant of SEQ ID NO: 9 wherein said variant has aryloxyalkanoate dioxygenase activity, at least one amino acid deletion or conserved substitution, and at least 95% sequence identity with SEQ ID NO: 9. Further disclosed is a method of cultivating glyphosate tolerant crop plants in a field, wherein said method comprises planting seeds of said plants in said field and applying a herbicide for controlling glyphosate-resistant weeds in said field of glyphosate tolerant crop plants, wherein said plants comprise a polynucleotide that encodes a protein that enzymatically degrades a herbicide selected from the group comprising a phenoxy auxin and an aryloxyphenoxypropionate, wherein a nucleic acid molecule that encodes said protein hybridizes under stringent conditions with the full complement of a sequence selected from the group comprising SEQ ID NO: 3, SEQ ID NO: 4, and SEQ ID NO:5, wherein said stringent conditions are 1x SSPE and 42°C, and wherein said polynucleotide is operably linked to a promoter that is functional in a plant cell, and said method comprises applying an aryloxyalkanoate herbicide to said field.
