The invention relates to the field of examining and analyzing the chemical composition of materials and may be used primarily in diagnostic medical technology for noninvasively determining blood glucose levels. A method involves irradiating biological tissue successively in any order using optical radiation in the following ranges: a first range having wavelengths of 950 970 nm a second range having wavelengths of 1020 1060 nm a third range having wavelengths of 930 950 nm a fourth range having wavelengths of 740 760 nm and a fifth range having wavelengths of 830 850 nm receiving the optical radiation diffusely reflected from the biological tissue converting the received optical radiation to an electrical signal and determining a blood glucose concentration on the basis of the value of the sum of the electrical signals obtained when irradiating biological tissue with optical radiation of the second third and fourth ranges which value is reduced by values determined by the electrical signals obtained when irradiating the biological tissue with optical radiation of the first and fourth ranges. The invention provides increased precision in the determination of blood glucose concentration by reducing measurement error caused by the presence of water and melanin in the biological tissue under examination.
