The present invention relates to a composition for preventing or treating muscular diseases or for improving muscular functions, which comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of morucin, kuwanon G and Mori Cortex Radicis extract as an active ingredient. According to the present invention, Mori Cortex Radicis extract, morucin or kuwanon G increases expression of protein of the main genes p-mTOR involved in synthesis of muscular protein, inhibits expression of mRNA of MuRF-1 and atrogin-1 involved in decomposition of muscular protein and increases expression of mRNA of MyoD and myogenin involved in muscular differentiation, and thus enhances muscular functions significantly. In addition, the composition according to the present invention comprises naturally occurring materials and can be used safely without side effects, and thus can be useful for pharmaceuticals, foods, cosmetics, livestock feed or feed additives.본 발명은 모루신(morusin), 구와논 지(kuwanon G) 및 상백피(Mori Cortex Radicis) 추출물로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 하나 이상을 유효성분으로 포함하는 근육 질환 예방 및 치료용 또는 근 기능 개선용 조성물에 관한 것이다. 본 발명에 따른 상백피 추출물, 모루신, 또는 구와논 지는 근 단백질 합성에 관여하는 p-mTOR의 단백질 발현 증가, 근 단백질 분해에 관여하는 MuRF-1과 atrogin-1의 mRNA 발현 억제, 근육 분화에 관여하는 MyoD와 myogenin의 mRNA 발현을 증가시킴에 따라, 근 기능을 탁월하게 증강하는 효과가 있다. 또한, 본 발명은 천연물이므로 부작용 없이 안전하게 사용될 수 있어, 의약품, 식품 또는 화장품으로 사용될 수 있다.
