In various embodiments, the invention treats pediatric metabolic syndrome and includes administering a pharmaceutical composition comprising eicosapentaenoic acid or a derivative thereof to a subject in need of treating and / or preventing pediatric metabolic syndrome. A method of preventing is provided. In one embodiment, the method comprises administering about 1 g to about 4 g of ethyl eicosapentaenoate per day. In one embodiment, the composition contains no more than 10% by weight of docosahexaenoic acid or a derivative thereof, is substantially free of docosahexaenoic acid or a derivative thereof, or does not contain docosahexaenoic acid or a derivative thereof.
