An evacuation chair 100 is disclosed for evacuating a person down stairs and along level ground. The evacuation chair has a frame and at least one front wheel 134 and at least two rear wheels 140, 142 attached and rotatable with respect to the frame to allow the chair to be wheeled along level ground. The evacuation chair also has two rail assemblies 150, 152 attached to the frame, each rail assembly extending rearwardly and upwardly and being provided for guiding the movement of the evacuation chair on stairs. The rail assemblies have a belt 200 for movement around the rail assembly, to bear between the stairs and the rail assembly. The belt has an inner surface 210 for bearing against the rail assembly, an outer surface 212, and a maximum lateral width Wm. The outer surface of the belt includes an outer contact region 214 for contacting the stairs, the outer contact region having a lateral width Wc such that the ratio Wc/Wm is 0.5 or lower.
