An endoscope including a flexible diaphragm for coupling an endoscope optical tube of an endoscope optical subassembly to a scope body having a light cone. The diaphragm permits deflection of the optical tube in the axial direction for relieving thermal expansion and stresses in the optical tube during sterilization. The diaphragm can be provided as a wavy steel washer having inner circular edge that is welded about and to the proximal end of optical tube with its outer circular edge welded to an interior surface of the scope body. Alternatively, the diaphragm may be a rubber washer. The inner circular edge of the diaphragm is slipped over the proximal end of the optical tube and sandwiched by thrust nuts. An outer edge of the diaphragm is similarly attached to the scope body.
