A wedge to assist in felling trees but insertion into a tree cut is disclosed. The wedge (10 or 50) consists of two plates (11, 12) that pivot (13) at the end that inserts into the tree cut. A threaded shaft (16) passes through the opposite end of one of the plates so that it abuts the inner face of the other plate. When rotated the shaft pushes the plates apart, increasing the angle of the wedge and causing the tree to fall. The plates may lie substantially in the same plane where one fits within the perimeter of the other (10) or they may be of substantially the same size, one overlaying the other (50). The plate abutted by the shaft may include a recessed seat for the shaft end seat within. The wedge may also include a striking face to enable the wedge to be initially driven into the tree cut.
