A method for determining the concentration of a substance in a fluid, the method comprising: (i) operating a light emitter to illuminate a fluid (ii) operating a light detector to determine the intensity of light that has passed through the fluid to the detector (iii) calculating an amount of light absorbed by the fluid (iv) determining a mean light pathway through the fluid from the detector to the emitter (v) retrieving data concerning the optical absorptivity of the substance and (vi) determining from the calculated absorbance, the determined mean light pathway and the retrieved absorptivity of the substance, a measure of the concentration of the substance in the fluid. Apparatus for determining the concentration of a substance in a fluid is also disclosed.Linvention concerne un procédé pour déterminer la concentration dune substance dans un fluide, le procédé comprenant : (i) lactionnement dun émetteur de lumière pour éclairer un fluide (ii) lactionnement dun détecteur de lumière pour déterminer lintensité dune lumière qui a traversé le fluide jusquau détecteur (iii) le calcul dune quantité de lumière absorbée par le fluide (iv) la détermination dun trajet de lumière moyen à travers le fluide, à partir du détecteur jusquà lémetteur (v) la récupération de données concernant le pouvoir dabsorption optique de la substance et (vi) la détermination, à partir de labsorbance calculée, du trajet de lumière moyen déterminé et du pouvoir dabsorption récupéré de la substance, dune mesure de la concentration de la substance dans le fluide. Linvention concerne également un appareil pour déterminer la concentration dune substance dans un fluide.
