The purpose of the present invention is to achieve an absorbent article comprising a surface sheet (2) that feels good and has improved absorption capacity. In this absorbent article, the surface sheet is provided with a first fiber layer (2a) containing water-retentive fibers and a second fiber layer (2b) located adjacent to the non-skin side of the first fiber layer and containing hydrophobic fibers and water-retentive fibers. The skin-side surface of the first fiber layer forms the skin-side surface of the surface sheet. The proportion of water-retentive fibers in the fibers constituting the first fiber layer is greater than the proportion of the water-retentive fibers in the fibers constituting the second fiber layer.
