The invention relates to vacuum magnetron sputtering apparatus and can be used in various technical fields for applying thin films of metals and metal compounds. The present apparatus comprises: an airlock chamber (6) having a work table (8) for accommodating and securing articles to be treated, and further having a gas plasma generator (7) for the ion-plasma pretreatment of said articles； a cylindrical vacuum chamber (1) containing an axially arranged dual magnetron sputtering system consisting of two magnetron electrodes (2), each of which comprises a cylindrical cathode (3) with its own magnetic system, said electrodes being arranged one above the other； a high-vacuum evacuation system； a three-channel gas supply system, power supplies, an automatic control system, and process control means including a spectrometric plasma radiation analyzer and a control computer. The work table (8) is adapted for linear movement from the airlock chamber (6) into the vacuum chamber (1) and vice versa, and is also adapted for the planetary rotation of the articles secured thereto.
