A venous access port assembly (10) having a housing (12), a septum (14), a discharge stem (16) at a distal end for connection to a catheter and an interior chamber. The housing (12) includes a recess (28) with a surface oriented perpendicular to the base in each side wall between the distal end and proximal end (24). The recesses (28) facilitate pushing the assembly into a subcutaneous pocket (104) of a patient (100) which is enlarged by a shovel like protuberance (26) at the proximal end.
