The current invention pertains to a method for the production of a Manihotesculenta cell having a mutagenized DNA, wherein the method comprises a step of contacting the cell with the mutagenic chemical N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU). In addition, the invention relates to a method for the chemical mutagenesis of DNA in a Manihot esculenta cell, wherein the method comprises a step of contacting the cell with 1-Ethyl-1-nitrosourea. Furthermore, the invention pertains to a cell, embryo, plantlet or plant obtainable by the method of the invention. The invention further concerns a composition comprising the mutagenic chemical N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea and a Manihot esculenta cell.
