An ophthalmologic apparatus includes a focusing unit configured to focus, on an imaging unit, a return beam from a fundus of a subjects eye, a first drive unit configured to drive the focusing unit based on an index image obtained by imaging, using the imaging unit, a return beam from the fundus resulting from an index projected on the fundus by a projection unit, and a second drive unit configured to drive, after the first drive unit has driven the focusing unit, the focusing unit based on a contrast of a fundus image obtained by imaging, using the imaging unit, a return beam from the fundus, the fundus having been illuminated by an illumination unit.
