IPN compositions and methods of making the same are provided. The IPN composition may form a composite with a first polymer network comprising a hydrophobic thermosetting or thermoplastic polymer, a second polymer network comprising a nonionic polymer, and otherwise a hydrophobic polymer. A water-swellable, water-permeable IPN or semi-IPN member having a third polymer network comprising an ionic polymer containing a sulfonic acid functional group that is difficult may be included. The IPN composition can be used in orthopedic implants or in mechanical applications as bearing materials.
