A variety of antimicrobial glass articles having improved fading resistance when exposed to harsh conditions are described. The improved antimicrobial glass articles described herein exhibit a generally low concentration of unoxidized oxygen atoms, each extending inwardly to a certain depth from the surface of the glass substrate so that the glass article experiences little or no discoloration when exposed to harsh conditions A compressive stress layer and a glass substrate having antimicrobial silver-containing regions.
