PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide antagonists of human proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 (PCSK9) for controlling low density lipoprotein (LDL) in plasma.SOLUTION: Provided is an antagonist that inhibits PCSK9 function, accordingly desirable for use in treatment of conditions associated with PCSK9 activity. The PCSK9-specific antagonist comprises a heavy chain variable region comprising a CDR3 domain of a specified sequence or an equivalent thereof and/or a light chain variable region comprising a CDR3 domain of a specified sequence or an equivalent thereof, where the equivalents are characterized by having one or more conservative amino acid substitutions in the CDR3 domain, and the PCSK9-specific antagonist counteracts the cellular LDL-uptake inhibition by PCSK9. Also provided are nucleic acid encoding the antagonist, vectors, host cells or compositions comprising the antagonist.
