PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To observe a fundus image without a sense of incongruity and to provide an excellent fundus image by highly precise focusing.
SOLUTION: A focus lens is moved for an amount of movement &Deltaf0 at S4 and pulse emission is performed by an imaging light source at S5. An output of the fundus image by pulse light picked up is digitized into a signal at S6, contrast operation is performed at S7, and a contrast evaluation value Cn of a signal of a prescribed frequency component is calculated. They are repeated 2m+1 times and an amount of movement &Deltafn of the focus lens and the contrast evaluation value Cn are stored in association with each other at S8. When the pulse emission of the prescribed number of times is over at S3, respective contract evaluation values C0 to C2m are compared at S11 to obtain an amount of movement &Deltafi of the focus lens when a contrast evaluation value Ci is the largest, and the focus lens is moved to the position at S12. The imaging light source 16 emits light at S13 and S14 to pick up a fundus image, and the fundus image is stored and displayed at S16.
