This method comprises: determining the level of procalcitonin or fragments thereof with a chain length of at least 12 amino acids in a bodily fluid sample of said patient; correlation of said level of procalcitonin or its fragments with the risk of developing an adverse event in this patient, wherein said correlation step comprises comparing said level of procalcitonin or fragments thereof with a threshold level.
