Generally drug matters when subjected to controlled incineration, water and other volatile matter are vaporized and organic substances are burned to CO2, H2O and N2. Most of the minerals are converted to Oxides, Sulfates, Phosphates, Chlorides or Silicates along this Iron, Lead, Mercury, Copper, Nickel and Zinc are partially lost. At complete incineration, all the carbon removes which divides the drug matter into two portions i.e. a) Ash matter - which is inorganic and almost unwanted portion of the drug sample and b) Lost matter - which is organic and some useful inorganic matter collectively having therapeutic value, otherwise named as Active Matter. By estimating the lost portion into percentage w/w, it is possible to quantify the approximate amount of matter having therapeutic value. The method is based on the relationship of temperature and percentage loss of Active Matter which explores some valuable characteristic information regarding the nature of the drug sample. It is a Preliminary Shelf-life study and the data generated by the analysis helps to solve the complication of Shelf-life study of complex drug matter of plants, animals and mineral origin like Ayurvedic, Siddha, Unani drugs of India or drugs of similar type from any other country, along with a number of quality control application.
