The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for monitoring a status of a driver. The apparatus according to the present invention comprises: a plurality of sensors arranged in at least one of a seat back support and a seat belt of a vehicle a sound source analyzing portion for analyzing specific information of each sound source measured by the sensors when the vehicle is started a sound source location checking portion for determining the sound sources measured by an identical sound source based on the result of specific information analysis of each sound source, and checking the location of the sound source generation based on a measuring time of the sound sources and on the location of each sensor measuring the corresponding sound sources and a driver status determination portion for determining a heartbeat and breathing status of the driver based on the location of the generation of the sound sources and the specific information of the sound sources.본 발명은 운전자 상태 감지 장치 및 방법에 관한 것이다. 본 발명에 따른 장치는, 차량의 시트 등받이 및 안전벨트 중 적어도 하나에 배치된 복수의 센서, 상기 차량의 시동이 온 되면 상기 복수의 센서에 의해 측정되는 각 음원의 특성 정보를 분석하는 음원 분석부, 상기 각 음원의 특성 정보 분석 결과에 근거하여 동일한 신호원에 의해 측정된 음원들을 판단하고, 상기 음원들의 측정 시간 및 해당 음원을 측정한 각 센서의 위치에 근거하여 음원 발생 위치를 확인하는 음원 위치 확인부, 및 상기 음원들에 대해 확인된 음원 발생 위치 및 상기 음원들의 특성 정보에 근거하여 상기 운전자의 심박 및 호흡 상태를 판단하는 운전자 상태 판단부를 포함한다.
