The present invention is directed to water-resistant compositions comprising: a reaction product of at least one heterocyclic compound chosen from thiolactone compounds and their thiocarbonyl analogs, and lactam compounds and their thiocarbonyl analogs and at least one alkoxysilane having at least one amino substituent and optionally, at least one carrier. These water-resistant compositions are capable of providing or acting as a carrier for delivering benefits to various substrates, for example, keratinous substrates such as skin and hair, while at the same time, imparting durable or long lasting hydrophobicity and/or a protective barrier onto said substrates.
