The present invention is directed to water-resistant compositions comprising: a reaction product of at least one lactone compound and at least one hydroxy compound and optionally, at least one carrier. These water-resistant compositions are capable of providing or acting as a carrier for delivering benefits to various substrates, for example, keratinous substrates such as skin and hair, while at the same time, imparting durable or long lasting hydrophobicity and/or a protective barrier onto the keratinous substrates.
