Disclosed are methods for determining whether a subject may have hepatic insulin resistance, for diagnosing hepatic insulin resistance, and for assessing the prognosis of a subject with hepatic insulin resistance, comprising determining the level of expression of major facilitator superfamily domain 2 protein (Mfsd2) in a subjects liver, where overexpression of Mfsd2 is indicative of hepatic insulin resistance.
