PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus and a high frequency coil unit capable of realizing a wide photographing area with less reception channels without complicating circuit constitution even when the number of surface coils is increased and they are arrayed in a body axis direction.
SOLUTION: The high frequency coil unit is provided with the plurality of surface coils 30 and a distribution and combination unit 31. The plurality of surface coils 30 are arranged in the body axis direction of a subject. The distribution and combination unit 31 generates new reception signals by distributing and combining reception signals inputted from the plurality of surface coils 30 in the body axis direction.
