A blood contact surface containing a polytetrafluoroethylene microstructure of nodes and fibers, both in the x direction and in the substantially perpendicular direction y; in which the nodes and fibers have an average distance between adjacent nodes of 5 μm or less; and in which the average width of the 32 largest nodes in a representative micrograph taken at 10,000 times with a scanning electron microscope is less than about 1.5 microns. 2. The surface of claim 1, wherein the nodes and fibers have a ratio of average distances between adjacent nodes in the x and y directions from about 2: 1 to 1: 1.3. The surface of claim 2, wherein the ratio of the average distances between adjacent nodes in the x and y directions is about 1: 1.4. The surface of claim 1, wherein the expanded polytetrafluoroethylene contains polytetrafluoroethylene expanded in many axes.
