Disclosed are 19-nor-vitamin D analogues as represented by the general formulae I or II, wherein R is alkyl, hydrogen, hydroxyalkyl, or a fluoroalkyl group of particular relevance are compounds where R is the side chain as it occurs in 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, vitamin D3, 25-hydroxyvitamin D2, vitamin D2, and the C-24 epimer of 25-hydroxyvitamin D2. Further disclosed are useful synthetic intermediates such as (5R,8aR)-5-hydroxy-2,3,5,6,8,8a-hexahydro-chromen-7-one which can be utilised to prepare the compounds of formula I or II.
