Provided are N-(4-(2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridin-4-yl)benzyl)benzamide compounds of the general formula (I), wherein the variables are as defined in the specification. Examples of the compounds include 2,6-dichloro-4-(2-methoxyethoxy)-N-(4-(2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridin-4-yl)benzyl)benzamide and 2,6-dichloro-N-(4-(5-fluoro-2-oxo-l,2-dihydropyridin-4-yl)benzyl)benzamide. The compounds are aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH-2) inhibitors. The compounds may be useful for treating dependence upon substances of addiction, such as cocaine, morphine, amphetamines, nicotine, and/or alcohol.
