A sensing system for patient support apparatus (1) including a mattress (3) supported on a patient support deck (6) mounted on a patient support apparatus frame. The sensing system comprises a flexible mat (5) for placement on the patient support deck between the mattress and the patient support deck. The flexible mat includes alignment or fixing means to fix the mat in a selected location and orientation on the patient support deck (6) and a frame sensor or frame sensors (18) for sensing a position or orientation of the frame of the patient support apparatus, and a patient sensor or patient sensors (17, 19, 20) for sensing a condition of, or event affecting, the mattress, wherein the sensed mattress condition is dependent on a condition of, or an event affecting, a patient on the mattress.
