The present invention relates to a method for preparing vegetable mucin from Dioscorea japonica Thunb. and a cosmetic composition containing the vegetable mucin. The present invention provides the method for preparing the vegetable mucin comprising (a) a step for pulverizing Dioscorea japonica Thunb. (b) a step for filtering the Dioscorea japonica Thunb. pulverized at the step (a) (c) a step for obtaining a supernatant by precipitating the filtrate prepared at the step (b) (d) a step for filtering the supernatant obtained at the step (c) and (e) a step for fermenting the filtrate prepared at the step (d), and the cosmetic composition containing the vegetable mucin as an active ingredient. According to the present invention, high concentration vegetable-derived mucin which is more excellent in keeping moisture and synthesizing collagen and capable of strengthening immunity than the existing animal-derived mucin can be prepared.
